Halton District School Board students captured the highest number of awards in the 59th annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) in Hamilton from March 29 - April 2. More than 450 students took part in the ArcelorMittal Dofasco-sponsored BASEF at Mohawk College, where more than $300,000 worth of prizes were awarded to celebrate young science and engineering enthusiasts.

Within the HDSB, 15 schools participated with students creating 160 projects and capturing 147 prizes while competing against six other school boards and independent schools.

A big congratulations to M.M. Robinson student Monica Mahut for ‘Elevator to Everywhere’  who qualified for the Canada Wide Science Fair, taking place mid-May, in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Rambotics:

Rambotics - 2200

There was so much support at the tournament at McMaster! Students did well to end in 9th (considering very difficult match alliances). They combined with Burlington Central, to make it to semi-finals, and they earned the quality award (recognition of the robot's robustness in concept and fabrication - and our team's strength as well).

The team will be competing in Provincials at Paramount Fine Foods in Mississauga (formerly Hershey's Centre).

* Some students will be there Thursday and all will attend Friday and Saturday.

Currently, the team is 10th out of 173 teams in Ontario!!

The Friday MMR Update

MMR Website

Earth Hour:

This Friday, the MMR EcoRams and grade 11 environmental science class encouraged our school to be environmental champions, by switching off the school's lights during period 5, to do our part in the global event called Earth Hour. Everyone was encouraged to reflect upon the amount of energy we use and the amount of waste we produce during our everyday school hours. We signed our names to a pledge that we will do our part in helping to reduce climate change.

Other environmental actions the students organized included an Earth Hour social media photo booth with our photographer Nathan Teeple, and the handing out of paper straws in the cafeteria to discourage the use of plastic straws.

MMR families are encouraged to do their part during Earth Hour by turning off lights and unplugging electrical devices this Saturday during the official Earth Hour which runs from 8:30 to 9:30. More information can be found at www.earthhour.org

Dream 2 Dance Charity Showcase

posted Mar 8, 2019, 12:19 PM by Mary Page   [ updated Mar 8, 2019, 12:20 PM ]

MMR hosted the first annual Dream 2 Dance Charity Showcase for dance teams in the HDSB/HCDSB area on Wednesday March 6 in partnership with Frank J. Hayden. We had an amazing outcome for donations which were given to the Travelling Tutus Organization. Many thanks to all who donated in any way - you played a part in making a difference in the lives of less fortunate dancers around the world.

A big thank you to our student volunteers, tech crew, the dance teams in attendance (70 students between MMR, Frank J. Hayden, Bishop Reding & STA); and the 200+ staff and students of MMR that came out to support our dancers in their love and passion for dance!

Halton District School Board invites students, parents, staff and public to complete online Have Your Say survey

Opportunity to provide feedback from Feb. 1 to March 29, 2019

The Halton District School Board is inviting students, parents, staff and community members to participate in the online engagement survey: Have Your Say. Topics for feedback include learning opportunities, communication, involvement in schools, technology use, equitable and inclusive learning environments, and transportation.

The surveys are open for all groups from Feb. 1 to March 29, 2019. The information gathered from the survey will help the Board continue to create a positive learning environment to help shape school improvement and well-being plans. The survey will be available at www.HaveYourSayHDSB.ca, or via the Board's website atwww.hdsb.ca. The survey is available in six additional languages: Arabic, French, Hindi, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Urdu.

The Have Your Say survey will provide the Board with feedback regarding the goals and targets in the Halton District School Board’s Multi-Year Plan (2016-2020).

The Board will share a summary of the information collected with all stakeholders in June 2019. Infographics with highlights from the 2017-2018 survey are available at www.HaveYourSayHDSB.ca/SurveyResults. This data continues to support school and system improvement planning.

Athletics:

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys Hockey Team on their Halton Championship Win.  The boys played a strong team game and smothered Abbey Park with a winning combination of puck control, aggressive forecheck and stingy defense en route a very convincing 2-0 Win.  Although they waited until the 3rd period to give our MMR fans their first goal to celebrate, Abbey Park was unable to muster much of an attack against the relentless defensive efforts of our players and ended up with only 10 shots on net for the game.  The team would like to thank all of the great fans who came out and made their presence known throughout the game. The cheering and energy was appreciated.

The team has been on an impressive run since their sluggish start to the season, having lost only 3 of their last 14 games culminating with a strong playoff performance (and today's Championship Win!) with the team and starting Goalie Seamus Flynn surrendering only 1 goal in our last 3 games.

The team looks to continue its winning ways and qualify for the Provincial Championships starting on Monday as they travel to Oakville to face off against Blakelock for a berth in the GHAC Semi Finals. Good Luck Boys!
