Halton Food for Thought Program
Research studies support the existing link between nutrition and a child’s readiness to learn. When a child’s stomach is empty, everything else is secondary. They lose the ability to maximize their learning potential becoming lethargic and easily distracted. These children are more likely to cause disruptions in class, as they are less curious and more irritable. Before teachers can instill a thirst for knowledge and hunger for learning, we must provide and satisfy our children’s thirst and hunger within their own bodies.
Our goal, at the Halton Food For Thought program is to promote the connection between healthy food choices and improved learning. We aim to provide a safe, nurturing, fun environment for children’s nutrition programs within our schools. Student accessibility is top priority therefore regardless of income level all students can participate in our program. HFFT currently runs 102 nutrition programs in 81 schools involving more than 1,200 volunteers that impacts 22,000 students. In 2007-08 school year we served more than one million meals.
